Thing is, I don't watch a lot of fillums. (Not that sort anyway.) Aside from Hollywood last having an original idea in about 1973, I lack the attention span for your common or garden variety three hour modern blockbuster. I don't have a lot of answers. Unless you're asking who's my fave hottie French actress of the last ten to fifteen years, f'rinstance, in which case I can probably name you a First XI. SBS began broadcasting into my locality in the mid-'90s, and Your Correspondent was quick to discover it wasn't just the legendary goalscoring strikeforce of Les Murray and Johnny Warren that made for quality viewing; the willingness with which France's finest actrines tossed their undergarments in the skip before sashaying on set probably added significant value there, truth be told.
That French First XI, in no particular order:
1 Emmanuelle Beart2 Sophie Marceau
3 Isabelle Adjani
4 Anne Parillaud
5 Irene Jacob
6 Julie Delpy
7 The batshit insane one from Betty Blue
8 Audrey Tautou*
9 Juliette Binoche
10 Eva Green
11 Laetitia Casta
* slightly loopy but gets an 'assist' for my first date with the FDMDY, which was going to see Amelie at the Indro Hoyts Multimegahyperplex
Admittedly Binoche should lose big points for The English Patient being so fucking awful and Casta couldn't act her way out of a wet copy of Le Figaro but that's still a handy French representative side. Probably less lumpen and woody than anything one of Raymond 'Woody Allen' Domenech's apoplectically rubbish French sides have amounted to since choke-vomiting their way through the penalty shootout in the 2006 World Cup final on the back of Zizou Zidane's sending-off for nutting Materazzi.
Rock chicks.
Fucken A. Rock chicks are where it's at. Not your Bassingthwaites, Valances and Good Reams of the soapie starlet pop world; not the deliberately alternate types like Shirley Manson, Meg White (sex tape not withstanding), Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs or that fucking annoying bint from the Ting Tings; and definitely NOT the nasty skank stylings of Amy Winehouse, Peaches or Courtney Hole.
I can trace it back to where it began: two women, sometime in 1990/91. Suze de Marchi from the Baby Animals, and Michelle, the hot brunette lead singer from our high school rock band. Suze was all black leather, pouting snarl, husky vocals and shiny black Gibson Les Paul out front of the Baby Animals, and had every adolescent male's unmentionables in her grasp by the time their self-titled debut came out. Her attitude dripped with the unmistakable premise of 'Don't fuck with me, boy.' Of course that was precisely what we would have liked to do, had we not been spotty pubescents half her age and instead been, oh I don't know, that ponce Nuno Bettencourt from Extreme.Michelle was marginally more in our ballpark, by which I mean she went to the same school. Granted we had as much chance of winning on with her as we had achieving cold fusion in the rotary pencil sharpener in the library, but it didn't prevent us enjoying her tenure with the rock band. It seemed all they really knew how to play was the Screaming Jets' Better - which Does Not Work with a female vocalist pitched an octave or three above yer man Dave Gleeson - but Michelle's charms (often, so ran persistent rumour, unrestrained by the fascist paternalistic emblem of paternalistic fascism that was the D-cup bra) made up for such minor technicalities. She was, not to put too fine a point on it, hot as be-damned. The only thing she didn't do was rock the fuckin' stack herself with a sweat-streaked axe slung over her shoulder, largely as the school rock band's virtuoso-in-residence of that era could do Eddie Van Halen tapping solos and went on to be a Bloody Good Professional Guitarist, notwithstanding several years spent slumming it in a covers band with regular WoB appearee AJ.
So that was it for me. Rock chicks who play guitar >>>>>>> pretty much anything else you can stack thereagainst. I humbly sumbit for your consideration, in no particular order other than chronological:
Veruca Salt. Post-grunge mid-90s grrrrll band who shot to prominence with the single Seether and followed it up with the epic 8 Arms To Hold You album, produced by Bob Rock and beladen with riffs heavier and hairier than God's own dick. Up front were Louise Post, who Dave Grohl was fucking at the time, and Nina Gordon, who much to Dave Grohl's eternal discredit, Dave Grohl wasn't fucking at the time. Louise wrote the better songs but Nina was the better singer. And was hot as balls. Stupidly the pair of them fell out, probably over dick, and Nina went off to forge an ill-advised career as a milquetoast singer-songstress, while Louise took what was left of the Salts deep into Courtney Love territory from where they have not been heard from since. Still, 8 Arms fucking rocked and I may have personally burnt a groove in the UQ uni bar's laser jukebox vid of Volcano Girls.
Sarah McLeod from the Superjesus. Your archetypal spunky little Aussie rock chick. Could have drunk you under the table straight after blowing better credentialled acts off the stage at Livid or Homebake. Had a marginally hotter sister with a relatively forgettable TV career. Much like her own solo career after the Jebus (thanks v. much Moff c. Livid 2001) broke up a few years back, but that's to forget the massive impact of Sumo and Jet Age when they hit the market in the late Nineties and early Noughties. Largely on the basis of Sarah McLeod's awesomeness. Put it this way: she's from Adelaide, and you still would.
Lash. OK, they were invented by producers - well, unearthed from a school band comp in Perth and polished to buggery by producers - and their stuff was produced to within an inch of its fucking life. And they never should have been played on Triple J. Or invited to play live at Homebake. And they couldn't actually play live, let alone at Homebake. But Take Me Away was catchy enough... and, most importantly of all, even if the rest of them were a bit munty (may be a WA thing), the blonde guitarist was a fucking babe.
Sahara Hotnights. Daaaaaaamn. Four thermally-conductive rock chicks from Sweden playing dirty garage punk like it was going out of fashion (which, ironically, was the complete opposite of the case in the early Noughties.) Saw them live supporting the Datsuns at the Metro in April 2003, as mentioned in previous media commitments. Figuring out the answer to the Swedish equivalent of Ben Elton's 'Australian question' (in this case which of the Sahara Hotnights you'd bang first) was harder than four unit maths but after comparing notes with fellow attendee Dr Craigos (who like me wasn't brave/stupid enough to do 4U Maths) the conclusion was drawn that lead singer-guitarist Maria Andersson (yeah I had to look it up in the album liner notes) would have edged it very marginally.
The Donnas. Gold standard for all-girl rock bands. World's Best Practice at writing songs about drinking far too much and having vast amounts of cheap and nasty casual sex (to wit, tracks entitled Skintight, 40 Boys in 40 Nights, Take It Off, It's So Hard, Take Me To The Backseat etc etc etc.) Most importantly, they fucking wail. And, as is THE LAW for all-girl rock bands, the hottest one is the guitarist, and the guitarist is the hottest one. Not even going to bother pointing out which one is the guitarist. It's the hottest one. IT'S THE LAW.In conclusion, nothing on Earth is hotter than a hot chick who plays guitar. Nothing.
Well, maybe a hot French movie actress who plays guitar.
The Doctor is OUT.

How about an honorable mention to hot French Newsreader Melissa Theuriax.
Shes not an actress but then I don't speak French anyway so shes just as good to watch as any of the others.
I'm right there with you....rock chicks have always been much more attractive to me than actresses. For that matter, female soccer players too (a few exceptions.... Princess Leia in her Sex Slave outfit).
First and foremost for me will always be Pat Benatar. Not far behind is Nena, if you're into Die Neue Deutsche Welle sound.
Shakira is cute. Shakira with a guitar is unbelievably hot.
And when I was 14 and they just came out, I thought Poison were a bunch of cute rock chicks based on their album cover, until I realized they were all dudes.
Wendy James - Transvision Vamp - FTW! All others Place only!
I googled Wendy James and came up with a very well-dressed porn star.
ooooohhh purdy ladies. Another well researched post Doc.
There is only one thing better than rock chix who play git: rock chix who pound the bass. I present kindly for your consideration:
- Stephanie Ashworth from Something For Kate.
- Melissa Auf De Maur formerly of Hole.
- Fiona Kitschin from The Drones.
- D'arcy formerly of Smashing Pumpkins.
- Rayke from Pollyanna.
The list above must exclude female bass players who also sing. Suzie Quatro is an aberration.
Lobes - absolutely, the combination of hot, French and newsreader is win to the power of lots. Plus she's the only newsreader I can think of off the top of my head who goes topless sunbathing. Or at least that the paparazzi have managed to find. You don't get that level of service provision from the likes of Sandra Sultry.
Steve - if we're going Old Skool (which we weren't but we can) I'd throw a Joan Jett and a Blondie in there as well. Re Poison - I think a lot of peeps made that sort of mistake in the 80s with the hair farmer poodle rock bands - ironically that's the look the Donnas have appropriated more recently which is kinda fitting.
Lerm - WENDY JAMES F. T. W. ! ! ! !
Hadn't forgotten the tramp from Transvision Vamp - how could one - just that she could neither sing nor play guitar, putting her in similar territory to Sam Fox and Sabrina (or your Holly Valances et al more recently). So she's not a rock chick per se. But you would, I would, anyone with a pulse would.
U - sentiment appreciated sir.
Jamin - an interesting position. You could throw Kim Deal from the Pixies in there too - though she was on axe for the Breeders. Steph from SFK looked like she was depressed as hell by Dempsey's lyrics, explained why she always wore long sleeved shirts on stage even in 40 deg Livid temps - disguising the trackmarks. Mel ADM I'll accept with humility; D'Arcy I found pretty punishing - remember her and James hosting Rage and being whiny little bitches at each other for the entire duration (dammit hosting Rage is the greatest thing anyone can do in their entire lives!!!1!) But the point I'd make is that bass is inherently a shit instrument. It's played by whoever the worst guitarist in the band is. Whereas the lead axe is never going to be hiding up the back in a long sleeved T looking miserable - they're gonna be strutting it out front grabbing all the attention. Hence guitar chicks >>> bass chicks - but an interesting thesis none the less.
I had forgotten about Auf De Maur. Can't go wrong with a hot woman that plays the bass.
And I didn't realize we weren't going Old Skool. I just figured you were naming a bunch of women I'd never heard of.
Oh, can't forget Nancy Wilson. WAY hotter than Debbie Harry. Ann, on the other hand, is forgettable.
I don't care about any of 'em these days except Shakira. Put on one of her vids and its all hands to the pumps.
LOL at Therbs! You make a fair Point Dr Y. Must admit that I can't really think of that many other rock chicks. Actresses - Tatou or whatever her name is looked awesome in Priceless - worth a look (I did note that she made the run on side)
What no Chrissie Amphlett? Men have seriously considered moving to Australia and putting everything they own in her name...when she looks at you with those hooded eyes and pursed lips and says, ‘I Want You’ grown men weep. There's no need for euphemisms and innuendo with Chrissie....nothin' coy about that babe!!!
I should know...she once put her boob on my arm...http://www.flickr.com/photos/natalia_the_russian_spy/3552387033/
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3370/3552387033_a3c025339d_o.jpg
Try that one.
Oh yeah and Jamin...feelin' somewhat miffed you left yours truly off that list....I could get 'em goin' in my day.
http://www.youtube.com/user/NatalievandenHurk
Shakira... meh. Midget Autotuned Colombian who sings incomprehensible rubbish about her own breasts. Not even for practice. Not even with Steve's.
Nat - Chrissy Amphlett would go without saying, with the slight rider that the last time they had a hit, I would have been about 13. Not counting them covering Wild Thing for the Reckless Kelly soundtrack - cos it was for the fucken Reckless Kelly soundtrack.
Yeah I much prefer old school Divinyls...Science Fiction...Boys in Town.
Regarding bass: wasn't that a song by the Smithereens? Actually it was, and I used to cover it at the Story Bridge. "She held a bass guitar and she was playing in a band/ She stood just like Bill Wyman, now I am her biggest fan".
Can't say I agree viz the relative status of bass and guitar, though in part that depends on the style of music. What you say holds true for manufactured and/or metal stuff. But in good bands, the bass is as strong a voice as the lead. And it is stereotypically the bass player who gets all the girls... the singer is too unapproachable and the lead player is too obsessed or messed up (it's ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC, MAN).
And anyway, there's something about a woman playing a huge bass guitar that's bigger than she is that just sits really well...
Interesting thesis D. Setting aside Bill Wyman being probably more famous for hooking up with a schoolgirl than anything much else, I'm not sure any girl who stands like him is going to float my boat. Still, it'd be less stomach-churning than Flea or Lemmy, I'd wager.
I maintain that wherever you have the choice btw female guitarist and female bassist, the guitarist is almost always the hot one. Even the twin sisters from the Spazzys - Kat (guitar) > Lucy (bass). The bassists tend to be a bit patchier as a demographic. For all the cases For proposed by Jamin there's just as many cases Against - love the Bait as I do, Janet's just not doing it for me. The bass player from the Donnas cracks fucken awful jokes through most of their sets (must be a bassist thing, remember Wally Kempton from Even talking bollocks through their sets too) which ain't getting it done.
So the challenge, for anyone still paying attention: find me an all-girl (or at least part-girl) band where the bass player is demonstrably hotter than the guitarist. Additional approved course materials are permitted. You may use calculators. Begin NOW.
Hmmm, interesting list but I got a bit distracted once someone mentioned Samantha Fox, I still have that Playboy she was in floating around here somewhere.......
The standing like Bill Wyman thing isn't, I think, so much about stance as the way he held his bass: slung low, but with the neck held up high close to vertical.
But bass, guitar, it's all good. It's hard not to be moved by a woman throwing a heavy solid-body around on the end of a hard-working strap.
And don't get me wrong, I play guitar myself and in a band would usually play lead. Mrs Damian plays both, and sings and plays keyboard and pretty much everything, so this is all a little moot for me :)
Naut - yes. She had nice bits.
D - sounds like what the Smithereens REALLY wanted to say was 'she stood like John Entwhistle' but it would have buggered up the metre of the verse. The only rhyme I could come up with would be 'pissle' which I doubt would work under any circumstances, even German ones.
Hrm, "fistula" is a partial rhyme but similarly unusable, except possibly in Japan
Right you bunch of pubes, I have a female bass player-related challenge for you. Google The Drones' cover of Kev Carmody's River of Tears and I challenge you not to get a bit of blood a-flowin to the nether regions whence good lady Fiona saunters around the stage with the huge beefy rickenbacker slung suggestively between her boozies. If you don't get a nibble on the trouser truncheon at the moment, then I positively declare you gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
And NatV... yes, I stuffed up. You are one foxy bass weilding babe. (Note - that fawning compliment was not in the past tense).
It looks like a Fender in the version I could find on You Tube
D - LOL!
Jamin - I'll pay that... but the hairy bastard on lead was hardly any sort of competition was he?
I'd do 'im... oh wait, what?
Oh right... I've killed the conversation again, haven't I? No guys, come on. Come back. I didn't mean it like that, honest. I was just sayin, y'know, that if he gave me that special, y'know, glare and raised eyebrow combo from the stage, and hinted, y'know, of something more I'd probably, y'know, like go for the dry hump or sumfin.
Just like everyone would. Nothing suss, right? Right? Guys?
Ah shit... come on! Hey let's talk about other hot rock chicks who I would totally wank about. Female drummers!! No? Keyboardists?
Hello? Anyone?
Yeah looked a P-bass to me as well. Not that I would know a P-bass from a Jaguar if someone cracked me over the scone with same.
Jamin - we're all brothers here, except for Nat as she lacks the bits, but those who aren't using them are of course happy to lend her them. I would never dream of imposing my own crypto-fascist white heterosexual hegemony upon your gender identification.
Yobbo - a Precision Bass and a Jaguar have quite different shaped bodies, but all Fenders will have a similar head and neck. A Precision looks a lot like a scaled-up strat, with some slightly Rickenbackerish angles on the body. A Jaguar has a sort of backward sloping body, at least if I remember right.
I tend to forget Chrissie Amphlett when thinking about hot rock chicks, simply because they didn't have many hits here in the US...it took a song about masturbation to crack our charts, I think if radio gave them more of a chance they could've hit it bigger.
Natalie of course will always be my favorite female bassist, even if she never recorded herself playing the bass line from The Breakfast Club when John Bender was crawling through the ceiling.
AW Christ, you put a pic of Sultry Sully on here and that just about fucked me whole show, thats seriously, I MEAN seriously effin jumpable, now if it was the new, late night news reader, wiff black hair on chunnel 9, DAM!, thats ...just...oooooh yeah baby. BUT. The lead singer from THE BANGLES, then a late affliction for Red Heads in LEOPARD SKIN and wandering around on salt flats...OMFG., So I guess it doesn't matter where they have a guitar in their hand or not, just something in their hand would be good...
D - yup guessed a Precision from glimpsing the Stratness of the body - but to be fair I wasn't really looking at the bass!
Hav - yeah Sandra Sultry's very fine. Very well preserved for her vintage. Haven't caught the new Nine newsreader but in general you could throw a blanket over most female newsreaders and call them all highly shagworthy. Maybe not Lee Lin Chin from SBS unless you're into the aging Asian market (though Mary K still had it well into her career.) Chris Bath on Seven began on our local station NBN - a babe then as now. Tracey Spicer. Georgie Gardner. Leila Mckinnon. Heaps more. To be fair it's a requirement of the position.
