On shaky ground

Steve Price is a lovely fullah. Mild-mannered, decent and reliable. As captain of the NZ Warriors he's undoubtedly the Shaky Isles' favourite Aussie, and his media-friendliness and on-field leadership has done more for the Warriors' cause than anyone could reasonably credit. Probably has as much to do with the spike in popularity in League in NZ as the indifferent form of the perennially choking All Blacks.

Yup, Steve Price is a good bloke. But Jesus Christ he can't fight.

Admittedly, he didn't look like he actually wanted to, when Brett White picked him in the dying moments of an apocalyptic Origin fixture at the Grand Old Girl Cauldron Suncorp Stadium for an astonishingly innocuous knee when White was resuming the upright to play the ball. To be fair, White looked like he just wanted to punch someone, or something, because he's ever so slightly thick. He IS from Melbourne after all. He'll be quite disappointed the credit for the hit which finally established the Price was Wrong, Bitch had to be shared with the late, random, cretinous and completely superfluous-to-requirements intervention of Trent Waterhouse, who got sent for it. Punching on is fine, but turning up after the fact and trying to split it up is a heinous fucking war crime apparently.

All part of the master plan, though. One-in all-in, win the stink and win the game, was NSW's declared strategy, according to avowed retard AVO Watmough. It'd seem Roy and HG, having been shut out of calling matches by the NRL's digital rights policy, have taken a gig as NSW's tactics coaches. Successfully, given the scoreline and the temper tantrum thrown by Justin Hodges before and after the final siren, with his take on the All Blacks Naughty Haka aimed in Trent Barrett's direction. Apparently Barrett, after his sly hit on Bowraville's Greg Inglis in game 2, is For It the next time Hodges and his Big Mates meet up with him, when the Broncos play the second-from-bottom Sharks in Round 22. Better hope Hodges and his Big Mates actually turn up for that one. Last time: second-from-bottom Sharks 46, Broncos 12. And given Hodges' representative captain attempted to remove the Wolfman's head with his boot rather than let the beardy nutter score a try, the fuckwit doth protest too much methinks.

Of course suspicion remains that losing Game 3 was a premeditated tactic on Queensland's part to retain Darren Lockyer in the Maroons side... and intercept specialist Brett Kimmorley in the Blues lineup. Sadly - for both sides - Kimmorley played the best game of Origin in his nuggety midget life (not that hard given what it had to compare with) and is, it would appear, the future of NSW halfbacks. Unless Sterlo or Tommy Raudonikis replace him.

Meanwhile, in accordance with the Old Man's great theory of the universe - that with time, Things Get Wobbly (houses, cars, people etc) - the South Island got wobbly last evening to the tune of 7.8 on the Richter scale, not to mention a mild puckering on the Sphincter scale. In honour of this great event - or just as an excuse to crank up one of my favourite underappreciated Aussie bands of the past few years - you just gotta Shake It.

The Doctor is OUT.

I saw about 3 minutes of the game last night and that 3 minutes pretty much consisted of people punching other people.

It has confirmed my view that the ball is superfulous in League and they should stop kidding themselves and just call it team boxing.

Sounds like you saw the same three minutes I saw!

To be fair, it's better than that pissy shirtfronting and shoulder barging crap that goes on off-the-ball in AFL. Looks like amputees having a tiff.

It was probably the best game of League I've seen for a few years. It ws incredibly intense and fast. The 'brawls' were hardly that. I'd say three punches at most were landed. Plenty were thrown and that always sparks a good debate about "is it safe for the kiddies?". Who gives a fuck? It has as much to do with kiddies playing the game as ice hockey brawls are to do with figure skating.
Love the "amputees having a tiff" description. I am definitely lifting it off your coffee table and pocketing it while your out in the kitchen grabbing a couple of beers.

Therbs - consider 'amputees having a tiff' hereby licenced for your own ends. Re the brawling - that was the first time I've seen a punch actually CONNECT on a football field in a bloody long time. Years probably. Jaimon Lowe threw one (a cheap one) playing for Souths a few seasons ago but apart from that, league punchups are more handbagfests than UFC. That said, Waterhouse shoulda stayed the fuck out of it. I guess that's what happens when your surname is a euphemism for urinal. Or when the first word most people associate with it is 'Gay.' (Oh alright 'Gai'.)

Nautilus has decribed ice hockey to a tee.

While I wish I could converse intelligently on League play, I'm simply going to make the observation that the football uniform shorts haven't gotten huge like those in basketball.

YD - The brawls last night were a shadow of their former selves. The NRL has painstakingly made it impossible to get away with fighting these days. That's why it was surprising to see the boys get at it.
As far as Naut's concerned, he watches a game where to pat someone on the back draws a penalty. If their umpires stumble into a player the player gets blamed. They are however good at getting good deals on bulk drug supplies from bikies and covering up sex crimes.
The AFL states also have the most swine flu cases which shows how soft they really are.

YD, in fairness, last year there were 1230 games in the NHL, and there were only 734 fights, for .60 fights per game. It's not as common as people make it out.

I really dug the song, they sound a bit like Cheap Trick. I could've used more shaking, however. And trampolines. Lots of trampolines.

YD - neither of the rugby football codes (nor AFL Australian Rules football) have gone the big shorts like basketball or soccer. Presumably its a mobility thing like with the tights worn by NFL players.

Therbs - agreed. Furthermore if the Qlders are complaining about the game being too rough, then it was just about right. About time NSW started playing like Qld.

Steve - ironically they describe themselves as 'Cheap Trick breaking up a fight between the MC5 and the Ramones in a back alleyway.' This was from around 2003 I think, saw this vid on music TV and tracked down their first EP. Saw them supporting the Donnas in Brisbane (a gig I wouldn't turn down, particularly supporting the Donnas' spunky guitarist) - blew them off the stage. Also saw them playing Homebake - big Australian alternative rock festival in the botanic gardens in Sydney. Bloody good rock band. Kinda lost their way after their second album. Don't seem to be doing much any more, a bit like Jet or the Vines - two more successful Australian bands from around the same period.

I missed the game - but glad that there was a fight!

Their style is totally Cheap Trick. Good solid guitar, nothing too fancy, a band built around a singer with decent pipes, and the classic Cheap Trick formula....not being too damn serious about themselves. I would totally listen to these guys, if they hadn't gone the way of Sweet.

Just some clarification here, I have no objection to the fights, I just can't understand why they try and interrupt them with a crap game. If they did just make it team boxing, I would be far more likely to watch.

As for ice hockey and AFL, they are great sports were a bit of biff just spices up the game.

Amputees having a tiff eh? It's still better than a bunch of gay Neanderthals clubbing their new boyfriends so they can drag them off to a motel post game.

Naut, agreed....hockey is a contact sport, and at times frustrations can build up, where a fight is just basically popping a zit that needs to be popped. The pressure is released, everyone feels better, and the game can go on. But, they also often happen when one team is just schooling the other one 6-2, and the losing team sends their goon out with 30 seconds left to "teach a lesson."

In fact, there is now a rule in place specifically designed around playing those goons at the end of the game. The coach can get fined 10's of thousands and get suspended.

It's a wonderful game to watch, and if there's no fight I'm OK, but if there is a fight, it's like having sex and also getting some filthy foreplay in it, you have some extra giddyup in your step afterwards.

Naut, the only requirement for RUGBBBBY is mas and the ability to run flat out at another standing object of the same or larger size. Slam into it and repeat the process.

This pretty much mitigates any requirement for thought processes.

But the right team won the series...OH YES!
