Australia's Most Bestest Town In Australia

And the winner of the Australian Traveller award for Australia's Best Town, 2009, is...

YAMBA???

WHAT THE FUCK??!!?!!1!eleven!?!!

Don't get me wrong, Yamba's not a hole. It's a complete and utter fucking shithole which needs a 'dozer run through the length of its preposterously and ponderously long main drag, but that's not the point. How does Yamba - YAMBA, for fuck's sake - beat bigger, brighter and better-known holiday spots like Byron, Margaret River, Apollo Bay and Woodenbong to snare the one and only national trophy for Most Bestest Township, Village Or Hamlet In Australia Evaaaaaarrrr, awarded by the country's leading (and possibly only) tourism and travel mag and selected by a panel of tourism and travel experts? And more to the point, how does Yamba win the above without the head of the local chamber of commerce having to personally blow every member of aforesaid panel of tourism and travel experts?

The clincher, it was reported, was the deciding question put to the panellists to sort the wheat from the chaff: on a scale of one to ten, how likely are you to recommend a friend add one hour to their trip just to see this town? Now considering Yamba is a good 20 kays off the highway and the road out there is truly fucking dire, this would give the panellists approximately fifteen minutes out of their hour having got into town to actually see the joint and get back on their way. Which in fairness is plenty of time to see all the myriad sights and delights of Yamba in their entirety. Even inclusive of a stop for petrol and a slash at the public facilities.

Now, there are many good things about Yamba. Or at least, there used to be. The Pacific, the most spectacularly positioned pub in the land, used to have Reschs Smooth (RIP, God rest its soul) on tap, and the bakery in Coldstream St - midway along the drunken downhill stagger from the Pacific back to the Captain's shed for more beers - used to open after Pacific closing time to sell freshly baked pies to half-cut munters like ourselves, probably as the smell of the pies baking would have enticed more inebriated and/or impatient souls than ourselves to rip the fucking doors down and help themselves to the steaming meaty goodness being concocted therein. And a bunch of slammin'-hottie surfie chicks from my high school lived there. But it's unlikely any of the above attractions, even if they were still available in today's Yamba, could be properly enjoyed by the average traveller in their fifteen minutes in town. Well, maybe some of the girls, depending how poorly the passage of time has treated them in the interim, and whether they could get time off from serving in the surf shop or the fish co-op.

So what to do with your fifteen minutes (give or take a few depending on bladder pressure) in the thriving metrop of Yambahole? Bewildered? Perplexed? Mildly disorientated? Well never fear as the World of Bollocks presents Fifteen Minutes Of Lame: What To Do In Yamba, Australia's Most Bestest Town In Australia 2009, Or So Some Yuppie Wanker Travel Mag Reckons, The Lot Of Choad Warriors.
  • Visit the legendary surf break of nearby Angourie. Get dropped in on by legendary surf king Nat Young. Punch him in the head. Marvel at the mystery and wonder of the famous Angourie Blue Pools, daredevil swimming hole for generations of local kids. Wonder not at the lack of mystery as to why noone has been allowed to swim there in ten years since it became the Blue-Green Algae Pools.

  • If, by chance, you happen to be have mistakenly packed a bucket full of golf balls which you have found surplus to requirements, the water hazard off the fifth tee at Yamba Golf Course, affectionately named 'the Shit Hole', is an excellent place to lose them. However, entrepreneurs should note it is a poor place to dive for them, being as it is the overflow pond for the neighbouring sewage treatment works.

  • Go wildlife spotting in Crystal Waters, a.k.a. Blacktown-On-Sea, in the hunt for the elusive Snaggle-Toothed Bogan (Bevanus dazzanshazza) in its natural habitat - the TAB at Yamba Shores Tavern on dole day.

  • Marvel at how two generations of apparently qualified state and council town planners could fuck up a township of 5600 people quite as spectacularly as to have two completely separate town centres - the Old Town and the Bogan Western Suburb - separated by a 5km stretch of road, limited to 50 km/h, along which approximately eight billion cars have to funnel every day in either direction. Or the fact that a town of near-as-buggery six thousand people has no high school and the nearest such mythical creation is 20 kays away. Or that the Bogan Western Suburb in question (Ipswich Waters to most) is built on a bed of reclaimed swamp, sand and hastily-bulldozed mangroves and makes Ross River look mosquito-free by comparison.

  • Go to Iluka instead, the fish and chips are better and the drive out there's less likely to bore you into a drainage culvert. Or Evans Head, or Wooli, or any of those other quaint little NSW North Coast fishing villages. Just don't go to Brooms Head. Stay right the fuck away from there. It's really bloody awful, honest. Noone in their right mind would possibly want to go there, so don't. Particularly not any of you fucking punishing yuppie fucktard readers of Australian Yuppie Fucktard Traveller. Brooms Head is definitely not a place you want to go.
On second thoughts, Yamba is probably about right for you lot. Go there. You'll love it. Plenty of room to park the Lexus 4WD, plenty of trendy streetscape cafes to be seen in, plenty of scope to tell Alistair and Marjorie back in Ascot or Mosman about your tremendously rustic adventure slumming it amidst the simple rural folk. Yup, Yamba it is. Bestest town in Australia, beautiful beaches, friendly locals. Tell 'em Dr Yobbo sent ya. They'll probably just look at you blankly, scratch their balls and tell you to fuck off, but at least it'll be a laugh for me.

The Doctor is OUT.

______________

PS An afterthought - so the more pertinent question is, if Yamba's the town you'd add an hour to your trip to see, which are the towns you'd add an hour to your trip to avoid?

A quick Arsebook voxpop turned up Tamworth, Guyra, Walcha, Muswellbrook, Scone... pretty much anything on the New England Highway actually, which is hereafter renamed the 'Don't Fucken Bother' Tourist Route (Farmadale gets a pass for pretty autumn leaves, pretty UNE first-years (read 'pretty pliant after a couple of RTDs') and a couple of pretty clever buggers who just emerged from their shed with a fully operational market-ready electric car), Denilquin, West Wyalong, Casino ('The Happy Place To Shop', allegedly, and home of the Beef Week Queen, the only beauty pageant in which the contestants are difficult to tell from the breeds they seek to represent), and of course Gympie, an exercise in nominative determinism if there ever was one. However, no suggestions got close to the Holy Trinity of Arsebag Townships, the Warrego Highway Triumvirate of the Switch, Gatton, and above all others, Woombie Land, home of redneck ute-driving fucktards called Brad who invite themselves along to one-day games.

Suggestions, as ever, welcome...

I've got to say that Yamba is a pretty nice place for a beer or two on the beach - but thats about it. A good spot to take a moll for a seedy weekend.

Shit towns - Murgon and its retarded sister town Cherbourg - Any of the aboriginal communities like Doomagee, Palm Island etc. Mt Isa & Mt Morgan are pretty fucking high on that list - actually any town with with a Mt prefix.

If Walcha is bad then Walcha Road is worse! Singleton - the closest town to the School of Infantry was a complete fucking tip. Seymour near Puka was pretty rooted too. Geez there are alot of fucked places when you think about it.

Worst Army Range/Training area in the country - a toss up between Tully (hot, wet, infested with giant rats, snakes and lantana) and Kultana just Nth of the Great Australian Bight (fucking freezing, windy, and ne'er a tree in sight. You literally couldn't pitch a hotchie or tent for kilometers. So when the freezing cold rain was blown North by Antartic blizzards you just about froze to death)

Armadale was always good for a few Slappers!

One little error, the shithole was actually the 7th hole - where your tee shot - actually went over the shit - or the sewarage works as it may be.

How do I know this? I hit 3 balls in there the other day.

The 5th hole on the other hand is probably the BEST beer hole on the course - being that there's a 240m water carry involved in taking on the said pictured lake. Playing in a comp round and 2 under after 4? Hit it right and down the middle of the mown strip thanks. Had 4 beers in 4 holes and got some 50c KMart special balls in the bottom of the bag? Load 'em up boys - this one's going long and left :P

Have to admit I couldn't remember exactly which number hole the Shit Hole was, so I dialled up Google Earth and tried counting them... poorly. The water hazard on the 5th looks sketchy enough to be potentially septic. From my last round there with Bell I recall the 5th as somewhere where my natural Gay Fade (read woefully uncontrollable slice) actually comes in handy.

Lerm - yeah Yamba's not that bad, good pub (singular) and good eats, it's just that under a very thin veneer of looking like an attractive tourist destination it's just another shitty inbred country town full of hicks, fucktards and snaggle-toothed bogans (especially Crystal Waters). Very much agreed on the topic of Mounts being generically shit - mate of mine from Rocky won't hear a good word against Mt Morgan - and the only decent thing to ever come out of Cherbourg was the Bunnies half Chris Sandow. There ARE a lot of complete fucking shitholes out there. Lithgow, Bulahdelah, Wilcannia, Echuca, Canberra. Figured you'd throw Goondiwindi in there - if not Texas. But Toowoomba... Jesus Christ almighty. If it wasn't for the 'Switch it'd have no competition. Bunch of us went out there for the V8s many years back and still shake our heads at the sub-prime sub-humans that populate the area.

The Famous Dawso would probly have me put Gladstone in there - not the central Qld smelter port (a dire shithole in itself) but the crappy little twin-town of Smithtown north of Kempsey (home to a Nestle factory and fuck all else). He spent a bunch of time there - his hons project in geology centred on nearby geological features - and rejoiced when the Macleay River flooded a few years ago and drenched the town in sewage, Shit Hole styles. Reckoned it was appropriate. Then again he lives in Moombi and works in Boggabri.

In the South Island, Gore (Tamworth's even more yokel cousin) and Ashburton are bumfuck rural shitholes you drive through at unabated speed with the central locking in the SECURE position.

Sometimes doc reading your stuff is like trying to catch a fly with 1 chopstick. I keep having to run around to catch the point. Then other times like this you make your point and keep throwing hammers at it.
either way i laugh the whole time.
I fucking loved the "eleven" in the middle of your exclamation marks.

i am a little bit impartial to eagleby, logan and beenliegh here in Brisbane

Uamada - cheers for the bigups - though usually if the point is proving elusive it's because there isn't one and I'm just talking circuitous loads of bollocks again. As for !!1!eleven! - yeah I stole that from Steve. He threw that into a comment here a while back (think it was on the Not Fit To Wear The Shirt one) and I rolled on the floor laughing my arse off. Though I understand there's an acronym for that these days.

Logan and Beenleigh... very much so. And Trailer (sorry, Shailer) Park. Beaudesert's not too flash either but at least they didn't vote for the Ginger Minger.

Steve said...

I think the acronym for falling over and laughing, and perhaps wetting yourself, might be STFU. Or something.

Yamba needs a Sonic drive-in.

Post-haste.

I might steal this idea and write about similar locations in America. But first I have to find out what the bestest town in America is. I'm sure it's in some god-forsaken inbred hellhole in New England.

Dr Yobbo said...

Looks like an equivalent rag in the US runs a Bestest City in America competition but the winner is usually someone predictable like NYC or Boston. If there's a best town award it'll inevitably be some cretinously quaint little tourist trap which punishing yuppie scum will want to descend upon in droves in their luxury SUVs. Somewhere in New England or Northern California sounds just about right.

Note to self: Next time I get the urge to go somewhere - don't. I supposed the benefits of that is the neighbours are well aware of my complete willingness to drop a kilo of rotting prawn heads in the down pipe next to their bedroom window if they irritate me. Suppose that makes me a bit of a bogan too I guess.

Nautilus said...

You did all that and didn't take the opportunity to pick on Dubbo, that un-Australian!

Steve said...

Boston fails at being the best town, because their stupid accent makes the entire region sound like a bunch of dock workers. NY fails because they vacation elsewhere and shit up the perfectly fine beaches, and when NY'ers do move to the suburbs, they first cut down all the trees in the yard because A, they're not used to privacy, and B, they think trees "attract bugs." In reality, the bugs are attracted to the stench of shit emanating from NY'ers.

I would suggest Hilton Head Island (South Carolina), but then I think New Yorkers would flock to it in droves and turn it into a sewage dump, like they did with Myrtle Beach.

Worst place ever? Guernsey. No contest. None at all. I'd try to describe it, but I wouldn't do it (in)justice.

Chaz said...

Hmm very strange no slagging off of dubbo or Mt isa...

Anyway I chose rockingham as the place I drive out of my way to avoid full of bogans and all the f'ing type of poms i left the mother country to avoid.

Therbs said...

Lithgow. Has to be. Most Bogan place ever. It has two saving graces; a bakery which sells very tasty, chunky beef pies and a factory which makes guns and ammo.
If you don't feel like a pie, drive past on your way to Dubbo. It has a zoo at least.

Dr Yobbo said...

Hmmm Dubbo and Isa - definitely flyblown shitholes of international renown - but as Therbs points out, Dubbo does have a zoo full of African animals going for it, where at the very least you can dispose of the bodies of your bikie gang rivals. Isa's got fuck all.

All I know of Guernsey is that it's where Matt le Tissier and Andy Priaulx come from, and both look vaguely Downs Syndrome, so I'm presuming a low effective population size there in terms of the gene pool. Mind you I get the same impression from Punter. Should probably throw Mowbray into the mix on that basis.

Chaz - the only reason I'm aware of Rockingham's existence is because the locals are yeehaa enough to have built the most red-state of all shrines to yeehaadom, a Nascar track. Sounds like a place to avoid. Like Calder Park.

NASCAR - proof that 250,000 people gathered in the one place can be VERY VERY wrong :P

Yamba's cool primarily due to Angourie. Hands down. Without it, Yamba is just another drongo magnet like most other towns. My big-upping was that Angourie is a great place for a weekend getaway. Wouldn't move there, though.

Now, talking of shit towns, I can't believe the great Riverina hasn't been mentioned yet. If there's one thing worse than an shithole of a town, it's 2 shitholes rolled into one and separated by the ("mighty") Murray River... ladies and gentlegerms I present you with Albury/Wodonga.

Not only does Albury/Wodonga boast absolutely zero attractiveness to anyone (unless a fucken long and useless train plaform or 15 year olds pushing strollers floats your boat), but it acts as an excitement black hole, sucking in and destroying the entire surrounding area. Wander up the road a bit to be knee-deep in Violet Town filth (home to the "creative force" behind the "rockstars" behind Killing Heidi... yeah, who?). Head a little way out to the beauty of Wagga Wagga and it's shit-smeared beautified footpaths. Turn south a little to the aforementioned Seymour and Wangaratta. The entire basin of hellish blandness could be nuked from the face of the earth and the only impact noticeable would be a slight dip in the sales of check shirts, uggies and spot lights which attach to the rooves of utes.

So, yeah. Yamba's not that bad. I guess we both have geographical issues, tho Doc.

Dr Yobbo said...

Jamin - I have a theory that twin towns are almost always a load of arse. Albury-Wodonga - bogan shithole full of Cletuses. Tweed Heads-Coolangatta - gaudy shithole full of retirees and white-shoed developers. Forster-Tuncurry - pretty shit the last time I visited. The Riverina could give central-western Qld a serious armwrestle in the highly competitive Epicentre of Arsebag Townships.
