Position A, Sandy

There's weird doings afoot on my televisual screen, and it's not just the glass of Cooper's Sparky I'm viewing it through. It's that there golfing tournament, the Strayan Masters, in which it is oft said, usually by nasal one-armed golfing drunk Jack Newton, 'The Tradition Continues'. Except, in this year's Masters, the tradition does not continue. It fails to continue. It is, indeed, discontinuous. And there's nothing more profoundly objectionable than discontinuities in one's tradition.

It's not the fault of Tigger, or the decision to get him in for the tourney. Paying three mill to get the golfing world's favourite mobile media circus (and reasonably handy hacker) down under looks like chickenfeed when set against the saturation media coverage, ratings increase, box-office benefits and sponsorship exposure thus produced. It's not even the shift from Huntingdale - the, erm, traditional home of the Masters - to Kingston Heath, the tight and twisty Monaco street circuit of the Melbourne sandbelt.

No, it's the fucking coverage.

Golf should be covered the same way cricket is. By the same people, on the same network, for the rest of time, or until all the presenters wither and die of old age. Any attempt to remove Richie, Bill, Tony and Ian from the Nine cricket commentary team will result in me coming around to your house and setting fire to something important, like your cat, or your pubic hair. I don't care that they're old and shit. They ARE cricket commentary. Conservative, old-fashioned, long-form sports need conservative, old-fashioned, long-form commentary. And so it is with golf. I don't even like golf. I don't play it - not in a form that is recognisable AS golf, anyway - and I don't watch it. Except for the Australian majors, on lazy summer afternoons, with a beer in my hand and an absence of thoughts in my head, listening to the gentle discussion between Seven's commentators. While waiting for the ad break in the cricket to finish so I can flick back to something more watchable, of course.

So what happened when I turn my TV on this afternoon to check out the end of the first round at Kingston Heath?

Fucking Warren Smith. That's what happened.

Warren Smith is a rugby league commentator for Fox. He's OK at that - shouty, random, annoying, but it goes with the territory. He tried being a motorsport commentator, briefly, before someone at Fox actually listened to the playback of him and Kevin Magee dribbling and fumbling through the call of world superbike races and changed the locks on the motorsport studio door.

It doesn't end there, either. Not only do we have a B-grade football commentator, but we have Mark fucking Nicholas and his pink shirts, filling in time before the cricket season. And to top it off, there's the promise of the most egregious man on Australian television, more ubiquitous than chlamydia and equally as entertaining, Eddie McGuire on hosting duties.

There are rules to summer sports coverage. Nine does the cricket and Seven does the golf and the tennis. That is the fucking END of it. Nine doesn't do the golf, because they will only fuck it up. And have, by sticking Collingwood apologists and cricket presenters on screen in place of Sandy Roberts, Pat Welsh and Bwuce McAvaney. Headhunting a couple of colour guys from Seven and ringing-in the Dark Shark from the Golf Channel in the US just ain't gonna cut it.

This is bollocks, and will fail. As sure as Jack Newton swims in circles.

The Doctor is OUT.

They should have Daryl Eastlake doing the golf. Need something to liven it up.

Is he still alive? Only if they can reanimate Barry Sheene as his Cockney sidekick. At least Dazza knew how to call a motorbike race, so he's one up on Wazza.

It is going to be a sad day when Richie calls his last Test.

I hate it when they fuck with the commentary teams too

Channel 7 sports dept should be burnt to the ground. The abc radio commentary is the Only way to go for cricket.

So says the beardy one.

Yeah. What you said about the cricket comms team. I live for Tony Grieg's pitch report. When he dies I'm going to bid for his gold-plated key.

Obviously, I can't comment much on your announcers-not having ever heard them. But we have our share of annoying sports announcers. For baseball, one need go no further than ESPN's Joe Morgan, former Reds second baseman. Possibly the best second sacker that ever played. Don't believe me? Ask him!

Or the Cubs' own Ron Santo, former third baseman on the 1960s teams. Now he's just kind of drifts and dodders during the broadcasts. For example:

Pat Hughes: 'It's a beautiful night in Milwaukee as Craig Counsell comes up to bat...'

Ron: 'Who's coming up to bat, Patrick?'

After a few minutes of this it's best just to watch the game and not try to listen to the radio broadcast.

I could go on...and on...and on.

Lerm - agreed, twice over.

Beeso - living up to your beardiness with your ABC preferences. To be fair the Seven motorsport comms team do good work. Cometti's a good AFL caller. The rest of it I can't speak to.

Nat - must say I used to bag Greig relentlessly but just recently heard him covering another series on subcontinental sports TV - think it was Pakistan-NZ - and he came across as more polished, better informed and more intelligent than the rest of the hacks they had. The same was true of Chappell in the T20 Champions League. The rest of them were spouting formulaic bollocks but Chappell actually had vaguely incisive and thought through ideas about what was going on - which is the POINT of cricket commentary, any bastard can describe what's happening, I want to know why it's happening and what patterns are emerging.

YD - I think Madden retired at the right time before he became Captain Random. Though old doddery commentators can be amusing in their own right. I should explain that most of the channel 9 cricket commentators are legendary icons in their own right, partly because of their own stellar careers, but largely because of a series of satirical albums released by a comedy artist called the 12th Man who's been ripping their voices off for over 20 years now.

Doc, Madden was well on his way to becoming Captain Random. Over the last couple of seasons he wasn't on his game. He was collecting a check on his name rather than his insights on football.

Ah, 'The 12th Man'. Our equivalent is probably Frank Caliendo. His Madden impersonation (and slobbering over Brett Favre) is dead on!

I felt the same way when Chris Berman was put on the Stanley Cup Finals (Nat'l Hockey League) broadcasting team. Hockey has 2-3 good announcers in the US. In Canada, several more. Chris Berman isn't even in the top 50. He's an asshole whose broadcasting style consists of giving nicknames to guys who make big plays, and when saying the name of my favorite goalie, Martin Brodeur, over-exaggerates this fake French accent. Honestly, even thinking about him doing hockey sends me into such a rage I can't even think clearly.

Oh, and in 2003, when doing the series between the Anaheim Ducks and my NJ Devils, he was clearly favoring the Ducks. Broadcasters on national events SHOULD be neutral (local games, obviously the crew will be homers), so when one of them clearly wants one team to win, I just want to fucking punch something or someone.

Oh the Seth EfriKARN accent warrants bagging indeed.

YD - that dude is uncanny. That's awesome. The 12th Man's hanging up the mike as he reckons the new generation of cricket commentators (most of which were Australian internationals who played in the 90s) are far too dull to take the piss out of.

Steve - Berman's bearable as a NFL talking head but I can see he's be shithouse calling or punditing on any other sport, particularly one with as much specific knowledge as the NHL. Mark Nicholas (who's a cricket anchor) goes OK-ish as a golf commentator as he's just the intro and outro guy, they haven't got him in for actual incisive analysis. Biased commentators piss me off more than anything on Earth - even if they're biased for my side it still grates. Worst offenders are the Brit motorsport commentators when one of their pasty little bitches is likely to win (esp Lewis Hamiltron, though he's not as pasty)

Nat - oh of course. Particularly when he's 'so pussed he cornt git the core out of the core pork.'

Le Tigre leads by two at the halfway stage in the Masters - guess he's keeping the three mill.

Great news - Richie's staying for three more years - he'll die in the job, I swear.
